We organize a summer camp, "Chemistry Meets Computers", for high-school students in the local area, in partnership with Detroit-Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP).
The registration for Summer 2023 is open and can be found here. Note that DAPCEP charges a nominal $50 admin fee. Limited compensations to the participants are available.
Chemistry, often known as the central science, studies the composition, structure, properties, and behaviors of substances. When you think of chemistry, you might naturally think of laboratory glassware. However, do you know that in modern chemistry research, computer simulations play an indispensable and increasingly important role? In this camp, we will:
- Introduce you to the concept of computer aided drug design and materials design, e.g., how computers help drug design to fight COVID-19 and how computers help materials design to effectively harness solar energy;
- Guide you through basic molecular modeling using free computer software, with which you can build and visualize 3D molecular and crystal structures. The visualization on a computer will help you study high-school chemistry concepts more effectively, such as bonding and molecular structure;
- Offer you a crash course on Python programming, via which you will have free access to Python courses hosted on datacamp.com for a limited time;
- Provide you an opportunity to work on a mini research-style project in computational chemistry, where you will practice the molecular modeling and/or python programming skills that you have learned in this camp.
